The issue is due to unexpected changes that Google made to the alum.northwestern.edu storage environment. We are discussing the matter with Google to identify a workaround.

This work may cause a brief service interruption of up to 10 minutes for some analog telephone lines at Kemper, Fisk and Wirtz locations on the Evanston campus. Analog telephone lines are used for applications such as fax machines, modems, and elevator phones among others. Regular Voice over IP telephones in work spaces and conference rooms will not be affected.

This work is being performed to address service stability issues after applying software updates on March 2nd.

No service impact is expected due to the redundant nature of the infrastructure in scope for this maintenance activity.

Resolved - This incident has been resolved.

The root cause is user jobs running across many nodes on different IB fabric generations. While RCI has remediated impact from this incident, we continue to refine our understanding of how these jobs affect Quest and take steps to prevent it in the future. RCDS is providing guidance to Quest's user community to restrict these jobs to a single IB fabric generation in the future. RCI has also changed the automatic reboot procedures on Quest's nodes and jobs are no longer getting killed due to reboots.

Investigating - Quest is experiencing congestion with its InfiniBand network fabric, which is causing failures for a small percentage of jobs and longer-than-usual wait times since Saturday. Northwestern IT is investigating the root cause and has already engaged vendors to mitigate the issue.

At this time, we recommend that Quest users check the status of their finished jobs and resubmit them if needed.

We will provide updates on this issue as they become available.
